Twenty four teams were greeted early Saturday morning with unseasonably cold temperatures in the forties, a few snow flurries and winds gusting to twenty mph from the W-NW. Racing got underway on time with the first warning at 1015hrs. The breeze shifted to the NW and increased in velocity as the afternoon progressed. Sailors were challenged by the rain, sleet and shifty conditions but were able to complete ten solid races by around 1545hrs. Racing was tight throughout the day and sailors remained in good spirits despite the cold!
Day two of the MISSA Great Oaks Qualifier saw an increase in air temperature and a decrease in wind velocity, ranging from seven to fifteen mph. Winds from the SW filled nicely on the course as sailors got race eleven underway on time at 0930. The SW winds were fairly consistent throughout the day, allowing for the completion of eight more races. The racing remained tight, and teams moved in and out of qualifying position. Congratulations to the top four finishers in order for qualifying to attend the Great Oaks Nationals: Latin School of Chicago, Walter Payton College Prep, Spring Lake & Detroit Country Day. Sail fast! I would like to thank all of coaches & teams who brought boats, LFHS parents and sailors, and the LFHS staff for the help & support this weekend.
