Turkey Leg Regatta

The first day of November fall sailing at Spring Lake Yacht Club for the annual Turkey Leg Regatta was met with a layer of frost on boats and gear. Starting temperature for the day was a brisk 33 degrees, ultimately climbing to the low forties with wind speeds in the mid-teens with occasional gusts in the high teens. Winds out of the north were unpredictably shifty, requiring the race committee to continually alter mark placement. As challenging as the wind was for the committee, there was only one race abandoned pre-start after wind shifted a good 90 degrees just prior to a start. Once things settled down, the race was restarted. Given all of the wind shifts, the fleet did pretty well overall reading the changes, however there were several sailors throughout the six races in A and B divisions that started the first beat toward the windward mark close hauled only to find themselves in irons as they began to get close to the windward mark. The courses sailed included a windward leeward two with a leeward gate and offset finish and a windward leeward one with a leeward gate and offset finish. Each division sailed one of each course to make sure sailors had enough time on the water, as well as enough time between races to warm up if needed and be fresh for their next rotation. For a Tier Three event and 21 boats on the line, it was great to see only 3-4 individual recalls and no general recalls.
