Eighteen teams from throughout the MASSA district converged upon Mill Creek at Fort Monroe in Hampton Virginia for the Fall Fleet Championship. Under clear skies winds were light but shifty starting out of the NW and clocking to E, and back with frequent oscillations Velocity ranged from 4 mph gusting to 10 mph. Seas were flat with minimal current. We were able to complete 8 races in each division on a W4 course.
Teams reconvened at Mill Creek at 9:00 to find calmer conditions with winds ranging from 0mph to 8 mph, primarily out of the SE with oscillations ranging from west of south to due east. Seas were flat, with a small but noticeable ebb current.
A division was able to complete 2 W4 races as the wind diminished. B division started the morning set with 2 general recalls, followed by an abandonment due to lack of wind. Sailors waited out the postponement on the water before being sent to the floating dock for further postponement. At about 1:00 wind filled in to sailable, and we were able to complete 2 B races before the no start after cut off time at 2:00.
Ranney School captured first place, followed by Severn School in second place, and Christchurch School in third place.
Ranney School, Severn School, Christchurch School, Christian Brothers Academy, Norfolk Collegiate School, and Broadneck School qualified to compete at the ISSA Atlantic Coast Championship in Rochester New York on Nov. 11-12.
We extend our greatest thanks to Gary Bodie for serving as PRO, and to Allen Kilgore and YSV for hosting a very smoothly run event.
