Nearly 40 sailors from MASSA arrived at Lavallette Yacht Club, located in the heart of the beautiful New Jersey Shore, for the 2023 Singlehanded District Championship and qualifier for the 2023 Cressy National Championship.
Three fleets - ILCA 7 Open, ILCA 6 Boys, and ILCA 6 Girls - sailed in a northwest wind that ranged from 12-18 knots. The race course was set up not far from LYC, giving parents and spectators a chance to view the competitive sailing. The race committee completed 21 races - seven in each fleet - before heading in around 1600 hours.
Racing in all three fleets remained tight at the end of day one, with sailors readying to return for day two at 830 on Sunday morning.
Sunday saw completely different conditions than Saturday, but was a more typical September day on the Barnegat Bay. Sailors were postponed on land as the westerly died and the RC waited for the southerly seabreeze to fill in. Luckily, the breeze began to fill around 1100 and sailors were able to get out on the water to fit some racing in before the 1400 cutoff time.
Ultimately, six WA3 races were completed - two in each fleet - before getting to that cutoff time.
When it was all said and done, the ILCA 7 Open fleet was won by Connor McHugh '24 (North Hunterdon) with runner-up Pierce Brindley '24 (Hampton Roads), the ILCA 6 Boys fleet was won by Sam de los Reyes '25 (Severn) with runner-up Christopher Draper '25 (Thomas Jefferson), and the ILCA 6 Girls fleet was won by Leila Pfrang '25 (Hampton Roads) with runner-up Alders Kulynych-Irvin '25 (Christchurch). These six sailors advance to the Cressy Nationals, which will be held on October 28-29 at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans.
MASSA thanks the Lavallette Yacht Club and regatta chairman/PRO Dave Magno for hosting this event. LYC volunteers were incredibly welcoming to all sailors and parents, including breakfast both days and a Sunday afternoon buffet lunch.
Congratulations and good luck to our MASSA qualifiers at the Cressy Nationals!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
