Thirteen NJ high schools making up seventeen sailing teams on the water, competed in the NJISA Fall Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Invitational for a coveted blue BBYRA Rooster Flag.
The unpleasant weather that has persisted in the region for more than a week carried on into today with periods of rain and drizzle for most of the day. Episodes of light-to-moderate wind oscillating from NNW to NNE only allowed for six races in each division with sets of LA2 and WA2 races. As the last B Division races were under way, the rain stopped, the wind got lighter and there was an occasional glimpse of sunshine through the clouds.
At the end of racing, the Christian Brothers Colts ended up on top with with a total of 34 points. The Seton Hall Prep Pirates made their debut into the top finishers in 2nd place with 41 points. The Donovan Catholic Griffins rounded out the top three with their 3rd place finish score of 52 points.
The top three A Division scores were each separated by one point: The CBA Colts' skipper Chris Small and his crews Luke Pennisi and Matthew Dupree finished 1st with 14 points; Donovan Catholic Griffins' skipper James "Scooter" Kopeck and crew Caroline Felser ended the day in 2nd with 15 point and the SHP Pirates' Drew D'Orsi and his crew Colby Christian finished in 3rd with 16 points.
Winning B Division with 20 points in a tie-breaker, was the CBA Colts with skipper Cole Buczkowski and crews Kyle Lombardino and Luke Pennisi. In 2nd place, also with a 20 point score, were the Pingry Big Blue sailors, skipper Megan Soos and crew Avery Hoffman. Finishing 3rd in B Division were Seton Hall Prep Pirates' sailors Ryan D'Orsi and his crew Arthur Fok.
Thank you to Mr. Jody Lutz on the mark and patrol boat who was kept busy adjusting the course with the many wind shifts and Dr. Nunn for serving as PRO for the day. As always, thank you to TRYC and BBYRA for their ongoing support of high school sailing in NJ
