Twelve New Jersey schools arrived at TRYC for the 2023 NJISA Fall Fleet Championship and qualifier for the MASSA District Championships. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating and the sailors had to wait nearly three hours to start the first race. Once the rain passed, the wind began to fill quickly from the west with velocity into the mid teens and some gusts into the low 20s.
Six LA2 courses were sailed before racing was called for the day. Southern Regional held a five-point lead over Christian Brothers Academy at the conclusion of day one. Sunday's racing will begin with race B3.
Sailors returned to TRYC on Sunday morning with hopes for a long day of good sailing. Unfortunately, the breeze built to over 20 knots before 1000, causing for an extended postponement to wait to see if the velocity dropped.
Just before 1300, teams began to leave the dock for what ultimately were six races between two divisions. The breeze remained puffy but sailable, ranging from 12 to 20 knots.
Southern Regional extended their lead to win the fall championship by 13 points over Christian Brothers Academy. Donovan Catholic was one point behind in third place and Seton Hall Prep was just two points behind Donovan in fourth. These four schools have qualified for the MASSA District Championship and ACC Qualifier at St. Mary's College in three weeks.
Spots five through eight - Toms River South, Point Pleasant Beach, Pingry and Ranney - have qualified for the MASSA Silver District Championship at Buffalo Yacht Club.
Southern's Turner Ryon, Noah Tallman and Erin Little won A Division by one point over Donovan's James Kopack and Caroline Felser. Southern's Jude Ryon and Noah Tallman topped the B Division, while CBA's Cole Buczkowski, Mitchell Hnatt and Kyle Lombardino were second.
Thank you to Dr. Randall Nunn, Jody Lutz, Mike Buczkowski, Rick Pokorny and Tony Lombardino for helping on the water throughout the weekend. As always, thanks to TRYC for allowing us to use the facility and the BBYRA for partnership with the FJ fleet.
