In the final weekend event at Toms River Yacht Club for Fall 2023, the Toms River Autumn Challenge welcomed 12 teams for a cool, puffy day of sailing.
With the forecast showing increased breeze in the afternoon, sailing was started earlier, with the first race beginning just after 0930. The breeze ranged from 8 to 12 knots for most of the day, until the bigger west wind started to blow around 1330. Racing was completed around 1400 with seven races in each division.
The top four teams either held the lead or were within a few points during the course of the day, but it was Donovan Catholic who finished the strongest to win the regatta. Southern Regional was second, followed by Stony Brook School (Long Island) and Christian Brothers Academy. CBA's Christopher Small, Luke Pennisi and Jules Buczkowski won a tiebreaker over Donovan's James Kopack and Caroline Felser in A Division. Southern's Jude Ryon, Erin Little and Noah Tallman sailed a strong day to win B Division.
Thank you to Mike Buczkowski and Rich Ryon for serving as race committee, Dave Magno for running the mark boat, and Will Zylinski for patrolling the course. As always, thank you to TRYC and the BBYRA for supporting high school sailing.
