The 2024 NJISA Fall Fleet Championship got underway on Saturday with 13 teams looking to advance to the MASSA district regattas. The weather cooperated with temperatures warming to the low 70s, while the breeze held for the most part from the west-northwest. The morning racing saw a more westerly breeze that reached the low teens, while the afternoon featured lighter and shiftier breeze.
Fourteen races were completed on Saturday, all W4 courses. At the end of day one, Southern Regional held the tiebreaker over Christian Brothers Academy for first place, setting up some good racing for Sunday. The top eight teams will receive berths to either the MASSA Fall Championship or MASSA Fall Invitational.
Report time on Sunday morning is 0900 hours with racing scheduled to start as soon as reasonably possible.
Teams arrived back at TRYC for day two of the Fall Fleet Championship under sunny skies and with warm temperatures.
The breeze was light from the forecasted southwest direction, so B Division sailed out for the resumption of racing. Unfortunately, the true forecast of low teens breeze never came to fruition, as sailors had to contend with a super shifty, light southwest wind for most of the day. After sailing six races in that fluky wind, a southerly filled for the 11th race in A and B Divisions. Race 11B was started just before the cutoff time of 1400 hours, which concluded the series.
Southern Regional sailed a strong Sunday to secure first place, holding off second place Christian Brothers Academy by two points. Donovan Catholic and Toms River South finished in third and fourth place. These four teams will represent the NJISA in Hampton, Virginia next weekend for the MASSA Fall Fleet Championship.
Teams five through eight - Ranney, Point Beach, Pingry and Delbarton - have qualified for the MASSA Fall Invitational at Washington College in two weeks.
In A Division, it was CBA's Cole Buczkowski, Seth Santos and Matthew Dupree at the top of the standings, while Southern's Jude Ryon, Gannon Botwinick, Noah Tallman and Belle Place firmly won B Division.
One protest was heard from Saturday's racing, resulting in a DSQ, while one request for breakdown was granted. Thank you to US Sailing judges Harry Foote and Peter Chirlian for hearing these filings.
