NJ Mallory Qualifier

Summary

Sunday, April 6:

Rumson ??" Fair Haven High School (RFH) won the 2014 Mallory Championship Qualifier Regatta held at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club in Oceanport, NJ on Sunday, April 6th. The regatta, which was co-hosted by Monmouth University and sailed in Monmouth’s fleet of FJs, was originally scheduled as a two-day event, but 20-knot winds with gusts over 30 knots forced cancellation of racing on Saturday. Sunday started out with an early 9am first gun in an 8- to 10-knot breeze out of the northwest with windshifts up to 30 degrees that tested the sailors’ tactical skills. The breeze began to drop at around 1pm, and Race B6 was abandoned when the wind died. The breeze returned from the northeast and then quickly clocked to the east and then southeast, again at around 8 to 10 knots. Race B6 was re-sailed and then the race committee was able to get in another rotation set for a total of 16 races.

The competition could hardly have been closer, with runner-up Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) notching identical scores with RFH in both divisions ??" 24 points in A Division and 19 points in B Division. RFH won on the tiebreaker with 7 first-place finishes vs 6 race wins for CBA. Joining the tight competition in A division was Red Bank Regional High School’s team, also with 24 points.

RFH and CBA will now move on to the MASSA regional qualifier regatta to be held in Norfolk on April 12 & 13. They will be joined by Toms River North HS, who finished third with 74 points, and Southern Regional HS, who finished fourth with 79 points, edging out fifth-place finisher Monsignor Donovan HS with 82 points. Congrats and best of luck to our four very worthy qualifiers.

Many thanks to PROs Gordon and Amy Milnes and Dave Magno, the rescue / mark boat team of John Gearon and Rob List, judges Jeff Jacobi and Pris Gettis, and protest committee chair Randy Nunn for taking the time to run a great even

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
