The 2014 Golden Bear Regatta was sailed out of Treasure Island Sailing Center for the third year this past weekend. The 64 new sets of PCISA sails arrived in California just in time and the sailors had the privilege of hoisting brand new sails right out of the plastic bags on Saturday morning. With the new sails the PCISA allowed 64 teams to participate even though the regular regatta cap is 60. The Bay Area Youth Sailing Board worked hard to install all the floating docks for launching and rotations, since TISC keeps them in the parking lot during the winter.
On Saturday morning the fleet was greeted to warm and sunny conditions with a light westerly filling in during the skippers’ meeting. The teams launched on time and the first race was started on time just after 11am. The morning wind started out great and then started to die on the second beat of this first race. It got too shifty and the RC abandoned race 1. After a short break the real westerly filled and the sailors were treated to a perfect 7-11 knots. The venue provides nice flat water and a close dock to rotate efficiently on, so the RC was able to complete two-and-a-half full rotations before 5 o’clock.
On Sunday a 10:30 start time was scheduled but with a light southerly the fleet was kept on shore to wait for the westerly. At about 11:15 the boats began to launch for an 11:45 start. Unfortunately this promising breeze died quickly and all the boats drifted around for over an hour. At just after 1 o’clock the wind was back on and great racing resumed in moderate breeze under sunny skies. The RC was only able to complete 7 total races for Silver Fleet and 8 for Gold Fleet before the 4 o’clock cutoff time. With the Gold and Silver split as well as the regular A and B divisions, with rotations every two races, this was actually a lot of racing for the high school teams. 30 races were scored over the weekend and Newport Harbor High School took first place in Gold, with Long Beach Poly winning Silver.
