After an overnight rainstorm, it was a beautiful day in Toms River for the NJISA 2023 Girls Fleet Championship, which serves as the qualifier for the MASSA Girls Championship!
Sixteen teams from 10 schools completed a 10-race series in challenging wind conditions. While temperatures nearly reached 70 under sunny skies, the breeze oscillated throughout the day from a west-northwest direction. The sailors contended with repeated breeze lines that reached 10-15 knots, but also saw periods of light and swirly shifts. All 10 races were of the W4 format, with two short breaks given to return to the dock for coaching and refreshments.
Summit's Pilar Cundey '23 and Grace Penque '25 won four of the first five races to jump out in front and the duo grew the lead from there in an impressive performance. Conestoga's Belle Cremer '24 and Ava McAnaney '25 were the runners-up in a tightly contested battle for places second through fifth. The Pingry School's Charlotte Cundey '26 and Avery Hoffman '26 were third, one point ahead of a tie between Toms River North's Iliana Vasslides '23 and Stephanie Maulshagen '23 and Summit's Lauren Murray '24 and Dara Greengrass '24.
The top five teams will advance to the MASSA Girls Championship, which will be held in two weeks at Youth Sailing Virginia.
As is the tradition, the all-boys Christian Brothers Academy served as the host team, with head coach Jason Lutz as PRO and sailors Kyle Lombardino '25 and Luke Pennisi '24 as RC assistants. Dr. Randall Nunn graciously volunteered as the mark boat and Pris Gettis was the US Sailing judge on the water.
Thank you to TRYC for hosting this Girls Championship and to the BBYRA for partnering on the FJ fleet. Good luck to the NJISA girls in Virginia!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
