The New Jersey high school sailing season came to a close with the annual State Championship at Toms River Yacht Club. Thirteen teams arrived to dreary skies and drizzle, which turned into periods of steady rain throughout the day. The rain affected the breeze significantly, with an easterly turning south and even southwest at times. Ultimately, only 10 W4 races were completed due to the multiple course realignments and a brief midday postponement to see if the breeze stabilized.
Donovan Catholic was able to weather the conditions the best, turning in eight consecutive races of top three finishes during the series. Donovan topped the standings over Christian Brothers Academy in second place and the defending champion Southern Regional in third place. Pingry and Seton Hall Prep completed the top five.
Donovan's James Kopack and Caroline Felser won A Division by two points over Delbarton's James O'Gwen and Johnny Lang. Likewise, Donovan's Kevin Brooksbank and Liam Marcell won B Division by a point over Pingry's Charlotte Cundey and Avery Hoffman.
Thanks to Dr. Randall Nunn for serving as PRO and Jody Lutz for running the mark boat in the less-than-ideal conditions. Harry Foote graciously remained on-call at TRYC as our US Sailing judge. Finally, a big thank you to Toms River Yacht Club for continuing to welcome high school sailing to the facility and the BBYRA for continuing our partnership with the FJ fleet.
Congratulations to Donovan Catholic for winning its first state championship!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
