Thirteen schools descended on Toms River Yacht Club for the NJISA 2023 Spring Fleet Championship, vying for the chance to advance to the MASSA District Championships.
A light northeast breeze slowly clocked right as teams launched around 9:45 a.m. and a course was set for an initial east wind that continued southeast before settling almost due south. By midday, the breeze reached a beautiful 10-15 knots with temperatures in the mid-60s. Sixteen W4 races were completed in the series.
After a four-point second set, Christian Brothers Academy distanced themselves as the leader, winning seven races over the course of the day. CBA ultimately won by 17 points over second place Southern Regional, who finished the day strong to secure their runner-up position. Donovan Catholic, Seton Hall Prep and Summit completed the top five.
In A Division, CBA's Christopher Small '26 and Nicholas Cunha '23 won by seven points over Southern Regional's Turner Ryon '25 and Noah Tallman '25. The B Division was topped by Donovan's Kevin Brooksbank '23 and Liam Marcell '26 with CBA's Bryce Vitiello '23, Luke Pennisi '24 and Mitchell Hnatt '24 in second place.
The top five teams, plus Conestoga, Pingry and Ranney, have qualified for either the MASSA Mallory Championship at TRYC or the MASSA Silver Championship at Sail Chesapeake.
A big thanks to Dr. Randall Nunn for serving as regatta chair and mark boat, Dave Magno as PRO, John Paggi as RC assistant, Pris Gettis as the US Sailing judge on the water, and fellow US Sailing judge Jim Walsh as part of the protest committee. As always, a special thanks to TRYC for hosting the NJISA and to the BBYRA for partnering with the league on the FJ fleet. Best of luck to the teams at the MASSA Championships!
