Summary

Saturday, June 3:

VISA welcomed 18 teams from schools across the nation to Youth Sailing Virginia and Mill Creek at Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia. Races started at 9:45AM with shifty westerly winds at 5-10 mph with gusts in the low teens that built during the day to 15-20 mph gusting up to mid 20's. Seas were flat. Skies were partly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70's. windwRaces concluded for the day at 4:38PM.

We completed 8 windward/leeward races in each division. Finishing the first day of racing, Hampton Roads Navigators were
 in first place, Christian Brothers Colts held second place, and Norfolk Collegiate Oaks was in third place.

Several protests were heard: Race 3B - East Greenwich v Christchurch - No penalties. Race 5A - Christian Brothers v Milton - Rule 15. Milton DSQ’d. Race 5A - Grafton v Jones College Prep - Rule 20.1. tacking too close. Jones College Prep DSQ’d. Race 6A - Olympia v Donovan - Rule 15. Donovan DSQ’d. Race 6B - Poquoson v Milton - Rule 18.2. DSQ’d. Race 5B - Milton v University of Chicago Prep - Rule 18 - U Chicago DSQ’d. Race 4B - Milton v Barrington, Leonardtown, and Minnetonka - Barrington DSQ'd for not keeping cleat of starboard tacker.

Racing will resume at 9:30 on Sunday.

Sunday, June 4:

Sailors arrived back at Mill Creek to find heavy fog, overcast skies and brisk temps in the mid 50's. The fog lifted as racing resumed with initial sporty westerly winds @ about 18mph with gusts in the low 20's. Winds eased throughout the day to 8-10mph with gusts in the mid teens.

Racing resumed with race 9A. Five windward/leeward races were completed in each division ending the racing at about 1:45PM having completed 13 good quality fair races in each division. Congratulations to emerging champions Hampton Roads Academy for taking first place with an impressive 74 points. Christian Brothers Academy secured early, and held onto, second place finishing with a solid 116 points. Norfolk Collegiate School moved into third early in the regatta and fought hard to retain the place finishing with 164 points.

Once again, greatest thanks to Gary Bodie for serving as PRO, running solid fair races, and directing the course. We are very fortunate to have a volunteer of his caliber who comes back year after year. Thanks also goes to the judges. On the water, we had Harrison Thomson and Kyle Pfrang. Hearing protests were Mitch Brindley, Allen Kilgore, Tyler Moore and Parker Purrington. And to the mark boats, shore support, and the rest of the volunteers - we could not have done the event without you.
