The 2024 Mallory Nationals kicked off right on time, the wind blew from the east at 10-15 knots, while the tide was flooding. The Principal Race Officer (PRO) led the sailors around the corner to the infamous Crab Bank. Known for its challenging conditions, Crab Bank didn't disappoint. The shifty winds and dynamic currents created a thrilling arena for the sailors. A division started in FJ’s and the B in 420’s and 12 races were sailed in both divisions. Leaders shifted throughout the day, finally ending Saturday with 12 races completed. Ransom leads going into Sunday, with others very close behind.
As the day progressed the breeze picked up to a solid 12, as did the current. There were some challenges at the leeward end of the line with the cross current and a sometimes favored left side of the beat.
The final B race, after a couple recalls, finished up at about 4:30. Though the day was long, the sailing was near spectacular.
Congrats to Ransom Everglades for their great sailing ending the day with a 3 pt lead over Antilles. Severn, At. Thomas Aquinas and St George rounded out the top 5.
Day 2 the PRO set up course in front of the aircraft carrier Yorktown which provided a great view for families. A strong outgoing current helped create some general recalls but after a few the sailors got plenty of racing in. South breeze averaged around 12 knots for the day. Midday the current turned for some tough upwind conditions. There was some shifting in scores under these new conditions with Severn taking the lead early and holding on. Congratulations to them. Antilles sailed well and took second overall followed by St George’s. Total of 16 races for the day finishing the rotations.
