The NJISA sailing season - and the school year - came to a close with the annual New Jersey High School State Championship, held at Toms River Yacht Club for the fifth consecutive spring. Eleven teams contended for the Elizabeth Olsen Memorial Trophy in rainy, cool conditions. The breeze started from the north-northeast and continued to go right, finishing at an easterly direction. At its peak, the breeze reached 8-10 knots, but was as light as 3-5 knots at times. Twelve races were completed, eight LA2 and four WA3 courses. A thirteenth race was started, but was abandoned as the river began to glass off.
Christian Brothers Academy led the regatta from the first set, ultimately winning the championship by five points. Southern Regional remained on the Colts' heels for the entire day, finishing as a strong second place. Donovan Catholic, Seton Hall Prep, and Pingry School rounded out the top five teams.
In A Division, CBA's Christopher Small '26 and Matthew Dupree '25 won by two points over Donovan's James Kopack '24 and Caroline Felser '24. In B Division, CBA's Cole Buczkowski '27 and Luke Pennisi '24 also narrowly beat out Southern's Jude Ryon '27, Belle Placa '25, and Noah Tallman '25 by two points.
Thank you to John Barbano for serving as PRO, Mike Buczkowski for helping on the RC boat, Dr. Randall Nunn for running the mark boat, and Harry Foote, Jan O'Malley, and Vince Harris for serving as US Sailing judges.
A special thank you to TRYC for hosting high school sailing for yet another school year. Our gratitude also goes out to the BBYRA for continuing to partner with the NJISA on the CFJ fleet.
Congratulations to CBA for winning its third state championship!
