A tough day on the water for the Gold PCC's today. With multiple forecast models calling for different things, we got a little bit of everything (with the exception of any big wind time frame). Wind turned on enough to try to get a first race off at 12:15pm, however a boat breakdown resulted in that boat needing to be removed from the lineup and replaced with another, delaying the start by another 30 minutes. After starting A division in decent breeze (4-7 knots), the wind zeroed out on the second upwind. Another delay took place while waiting for wind. Eventually it rolled down at an average of 230 degrees and presented the most 'consistent' breeze of the day allowing for two A races to be completed in the best breeze of the day (8-12 knots). The B division was delayed by another breakdown (the boat was given redress), but ultimately race 1B was started in decent wind (4-5 knots) that died and shifted left just after the finish. After another delay, the wind shifted around to 180 degrees at about 3-4 knots and held long enough to barely squeeze out race 2B. As A fleet came back on the water at around 4:15pm, the wind began shifting from 240 to 160 degrees. Another delay ensued. After a wind check up the coast, the Race Committee decided to call it at roughly 4:50pm.
Thank you so much to the race committee who worked extremely hard all day to keep boats up and running and do the best they could with what they were given to pull off four quality races. Hoping for better conditions today.
A much better day on the water today as racing commenced promptly at 10:15am. One general recall and the I-flag went up and there was not a general recall for the next four plus hours. A moderate SSW breeze (7-12 knots) that was finicky but tolerable resulted in some great and tight racing. Sailors definitely had to think as it was not a rinse and repeat course. All was going quite well until race 5B where the wind started at roughly 190 degrees (most of the day had been around 205) with a reasonable down course current. The fleet became spread out substantially leaving the race committee unable to square up the course for the second upwind which became a fairly long port tack. The breeze continued to slowly shift left until the race ended a fetch on the last downwind. The race committee let it run as positions had been established fairly on the first two legs and the wind limit threshold was not crossed until after the first few boats crossed the finish line.
The day changed to a southeasterly after that averaging around 120 degrees with left shifts to 90 degrees and right shifts to 140. A failed attempt at a start resulted in the second general recall due to a sizeable left shift. An additional delay ensued as the RC waited for the breeze to settle in. Eventually, a sixth fair race was achieved at about 30 minutes left until the deadline in a 4-5 knots southeast breeze, but unfortunately the hopes and dreams of getting 8 races in both divisions came crumbling back down to earth. Corona Del Mar and Santa Barbara were fighting tooth and nail for the final qualifying position during the last race with CDM holding off SB to claim the berth to nationals.
There was only one protest filed for a starboard-port infraction which resulted in a DSQ.
Thank you so much to Jon Ziskind / Eric Blankfield / Savanna Zollett / Emma Edwards (RC), Jeff Seawards/Jeff Escola/Ryan Wells (breakdowns), Eric Andresen/ Jon Wadell / Monte Wadell (photos), and Katelon Egan / Avalon Everett (umpires) for their monumental effort on the water this weekend. Thank you also to Krista Kieding, Meghan Behrens, the UCSB Sailing Team, the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation, and the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for the extraordinary effort they put into organization on land and beyond. Finally, thank you to Nick Kaschak and Liam Andresen for preparing all the SBYSF resources.
Respectfully submitted, Brad Schaupeter PRO

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
