NJISA 2025 New Jersey State Championship

Summary

Saturday, May 17:

Thirteen NJISA schools arrived at Toms River Yacht Club for the New Jersey State Championship. While temperatures reached the 80s, the breeze was a struggle for much of the day. After early morning rain showers cleared, a southeast wind tried to fill in for several hours, met with a westerly developing to the right of the race course.

Around noon, the breeze filled enough from the south-southeast to get the first A Division set off. After teams rotated and B Division sailed out, that wind had stalled and we were in the middle of two breezes again. B Division waited on the water for one breeze to prevail, but by 1400 hours, it was still unsettled. The decision was made to call racing for the day and reconvene on Sunday at 0900 hours. Racing will begin with the first set of B Division.

Sunday, May 18:

Sailors were greeted with much different conditions on Sunday with the breeze reaching the mid-teens by the time B Division sailed out to start the day. The west wind continued to pump for the six hours of sailing, reaching 20+ knots at times in the early afternoon. A 30-minute break around 1230 allowed for the biggest breeze to settle. All in all, 10 W4 races were completed by 1500 hours.

Christian Brothers Academy avoided any major mistakes in the heavy air, slowly but surely separating from the pack. The Colts won the regatta by 15 points over second place Southern Regional. Donovan Catholic finished five points behind Southern in third place.

In A Division, the CBA contingent of Cole Buczkowski '27, Matthew Dupree '25, Kyle Lombardino '25 and Donald Johnston '25 won the day. Donovan's Liam Marcell '26, Grace Torpey '26, Oliver Roske '27 and Anna Hnatt '28 were second.

B Division was won by Southern's Jude Ryon '27 and Noah Tallman '25. CBA's Christopher Small '26, Donald Johnston '25 and Julez Buczkowski '26 were just two points behind in second place.

Thank you to the volunteers who assisted with the weekend: Dr. Randall Nunn, Jody Lutz, Harry Foote, Vince Harris, and Sean Crabb. A special thanks to Toms River Yacht Club for another great season of high school sailing and the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association for continuing the partnership with the FJ fleet.

Congratulations to CBA for winning a second straight state championship!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
