Kick Off Classic 2014

Summary

Saturday, September 6:

The Kickoff Classic, hosted by Sheridan Shore Sailing School, was bound to be one of the largest high school sailing regattas of the fall. I would like to thank Sheridan Shore Yacht Club for allowing us to use the facilities as our base of operations and the Wilmette Harbor Association for allowing us to take over the parking lot and the harbor for the weekend. I would also like to thank Cameron Bielat for allowing us to use his boat as our race committee boat, and volunteer PRO Tom Elliot and the race committee for a perfectly executed regatta. The regatta wouldn't have been possible without 420s, boats, and sails from Lake Forest Park District, Chicago Yacht Club, Culver Academy, MYST and Lake Minnetonka Sailing School. Over 150 competitors made up the twenty-two 420 teams, sixteen Laser Radials, and six Laser Full Rigs. We had teams from all over the Midwest, representing schools from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Kickoff Classic used the revolutionary two-fleet course; the Z-Trophy. On Saturday we were met with 10-15 knot winds from the North with 3 foot waves, dropping to 1-3 by Sunday. Despite lumpy conditions on Saturday we were able to get off six races in both 420 and both Laser fleets.

Walter Payton won the overall 420 class of a wild three-way tie with B-sailors Hanna Mularczy and Becca Rose, and A-sailors Sabina Van Mell and James Wagner with 81 points. Kettle Moraine came in second with 81 points and Oconomowoc was third also with 81 points.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
