NJISA 2016 Fall Fleet Champs

Summary

Saturday, October 1:

Thirteen NJISA high school sailing teams arrived at TRYC to another wet and dreary day of Northeast weather (day 4 of rainy, windy weather) to sail in the league's fall fleet championship, which serves as the qualifier to advance teams to the two district championships.

The initial wind forecast of 18+ mph NE wind did not pan out as the velocity turned out to be almost half that throughout the day. Pressure was on an off, with many shifts, especially at the top of the course. There was an abnormally high tide, and an atypical current seemed to influence which side of the course was favored at different times of the day. Sailors, coaches and parents endured periods of drizzle, rain and fog all day. Sixteen total races, eight in each division, were completed for the day with W4 and W3 races sailed each set.

Congratulations to the Southern Regional Rams for their first place finish with 37 points. The Ranney Panthers were close behind with 42 points, going back and forth for the lead with the Rams throughout the day. The CBA Colts were close behind the Panthers with their 45 point 3rd place finish. The top three teams, along with fourth place Rumson-Fair Haven Bull Dogs will advance to the MASSA District Gold Championship in two weeks. Donovan Catholic, Summit, Toms River South and Toms River North earned berths at the Silver Championship that weekend as well.

Thanks to Mike Ehnot, Rock Gilman and Mike Neubelt who kept the races running from the committee boat “Sweet Jane” and Dave Magno who once again kept the course square. John King patrolled the course during the races as the US Sailing on-water judge, while Harry Foote was on stand-bye to hear protests. Sailing was clean and fair, with several teams doing their penalty turns to resolve their issues on the water. No protests were filed.

As always, many thanks to TRYC and OCC for the use of their facilities and fleet of boats.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
