The 32nd Great Lakes Championship, Chicago Yacht Club hosted twenty different teams to compete on Lake Michigan off Belmont Harbor as part of the Great Lakes Championships. OMG it was cold. Brisk winds of ten to fifteen knots lowered the 34 degree temperatures to a feeling of mid-20s. The shoreline kept waves-from-wind to a minimum but the crossing swells from Lake Michigan’s previous weather system reflected off the seawall producing choppy conditions. Wind oscillation of over 50 degrees kept everyone on their toes. Both divisions A & B participated in 6 races apiece during the event. The St. Ignatius School of Illinois distinguished themselves as the race leader, but Grosse Pointe South, Latin School Lake Forest, and Walter Payton were all within striking distance of them to challenge their position.
Sunday started much like the previous with a wide & slow oscillation centered from the NW. After two races for each group. St. Ignatius of Illinois solidified their weekend win with two 1st in Division A and a 1st and 2nd in Division B. (48 total points) The podium battle was intense: Lake Forest (92pts), Grosse Pointe South (93 pts) and Latin of Chicago (94pts). RC was unable to provide more races as cloud cover disintegrated to sun and little wind. The last race attempt included two abandonments; wind conditions were unmanageable for racing. For the weekend, sportsmanship ruled as boats took their turns. Judges heard zero protests. A mechanical breakdown redress was their only business. St. Ignatius of Illinois won both their divisions. St. Ignatius last victory at the Great Lakes Championships were back to back in 1998 and 1999
Congratulations to all the teams for providing great competition and to everyone for enduring the cold wintery conditions with a smile.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
