Fourteen New Jersey schools participated in the 2022 NJISA Fall Fleet Championship at Toms River Yacht Club, competing to qualify for MASSA district championship regattas. Sailors were greeted with a breezy west wind and chillier-than-usual temperatures due to a front that went through a day earlier. Once racing began around 10:30 a.m., the breeze had calmed to a nice 10-12 knots, decreasing to 6-10 knots as the day went on. Sixteen W4 races were completed by 4 p.m.
The Donovan Catholic Griffins were the most consistent team on the day, recording mirroring 21-point performances in A and B division. The Griffins won the fall title by 11 points over second place Southern Regional Rams, who closed the day with a stretch of top-three finishes to jump defending champion Christian Brothers Academy for the runner-up spot. These three teams are now guaranteed a spot in the MASSA Fall Fleet Championship and Atlantic Coast Championship qualifier at Stony Brook School.
The next four schools - fourth place Delbarton, fifth place Seton Hall Prep, sixth place Ranney and seventh place Pingry - will compete in one of the two district regattas, dependent on the pending allocations.
Southern Regional's Turner Ryon '25 and Natalie Shaw '23 won A Division with an excellent day, never recording a finish outside of the top four. CBA's Christopher Small '26 and Nicholas Cunha '23 topped B Division.
Thank you to PRO Dr. Randall Nunn and judges Harry Foote and Pris Gettis for volunteering their time on Saturday. Many thanks to TRYC for allowing us to use the facility and the BBYRA for providing the fleet of FJs.
