A sunny, windy mid-October day in DC made for challenging racing conditions at the MDISA Varsity Fleet Champs. Racers faced extreme wind conditions, pushing 25-30 kts sustained at times with sweeping gusts billowing in from the North East. The course was set on the Anacostia River, just south of the DC Water building, whose obstruction offered challenging shifts and varied windspeeds throughout each leg of the course.
Despite the conditions, Race Committee was able to get off three races for each division. After the 1st race, seeing that conditions were expected to build, it was decided by Race Committee after consultation with coaches to hold A division out for a 3rd race before rotating to B and sailing 3 races. After the 3rd B division race, the decision was made by RC to conclude racing for the day due to concern for sailor safety and ability, and fleet breakdowns following multiple avoidable collisions between boats.
Congratulations to Severn, Towson, and DC Combo for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.
We appreciate the knowledge of and assistance from all coaches that heard protests following racing.
