MASSA 2026 Fall Team Race Championship

Summary

Saturday, October 17:

2026 MASSA Fall Team Race Championship hosted by ANNAPOLIS YACHT CLUB - Regatta Report Day #1:

Ten teams from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and New York came to America's Sailing Capital Annapolis, Maryland for the MASSA Fall Team Race Championship, team racing 3 vs. 3 in AYC's Fleet of 420s. Saturday started with a short postponement. A gale warning, NOT a watch was in effect all day until 6:00 AM Sunday morning, so the Race Committee sent one of its mark boats out to check conditions before sending anyone on the water. Once the breeze was steady enough to race safely, teams left the dock at approximately 1030 hours and the first race started at 1100 hours. Sailors raced in a breezy 16-22 knots all day, and the Race Committee completed the full first round robin, 45 races, with the last race of the day (Race #60) starting at 1730 hours.

The Christchurch School “Seahorses” handled the breeze best, going a perfect 9-0 on the day. Severn School “Admirals” and The Stony Brook School “Bears” ended the day tied for second at 7-2, with Christian Brothers Academy “Colts” right behind at 6-3. Mamaroneck “Tigers” picked up one of the upsets of the day, beating Christian Brothers Academy "Colts" in Race 16.

Looking forward to the second round robin on Sunday!

Sunday, October 18:

2026 MASSA Fall Team Race Championship hosted by ANNAPOLIS YACHT CLUB - Regatta Report Day #2:

Sailors reported at 0830 hours, left the dock at 0900 hours and the first race started at 0945 hours. Winds were a range between 12-14 knots, then dropping to 8-10 knots by the end of the time limit. The Race Committee completed the second round robin, bringing the weekend total to 90 races, with racing wrapping up at 1316 hours.

Christian Brothers Academy "Colts" had the best Sunday of any team at 8-1, including a second win over Severn. That head-to-head sweep decided second place, with Christian Brothers Academy "Colts" and Severn "Admirals" both finishing 14-4. Stony Brook went 1-2-3 against Christchurch in Race 80 and Norfolk Academy also took a race off the leaders, but the "Fighting Seahorses" held on at 16-2.

Congratulations to Christchurch School “Fighting Seahorses” for winning the 2026 MASSA Fall Team Race Championship! Rounding out the top five: Christian Brothers Academy (14-4), Severn School (14-4), The Stony Brook School (13-5) and Norfolk Academy (11-7).

Thank you to the Annapolis Yacht Club Waterfront Staff (Dockmasters, Race Management Team, and Jr. Fleet Staff) for hosting, and to Annapolis Sailing School for letting us use their docks and facilities for boat rotations. Thank you to our umpires and mark boat volunteers, and to all teams for making the trip to America's Sailing Capital Annapolis, MD. We appreciate and recognize that many of you came from out of state and wanted to race all weekend even though most sailing regattas got canceled on Saturday due to the Gale Warning!

Good luck to everyone at the MASSA Fall FLEET RACE Championship on October 24-25, 2026!
