Oregon Scrimmage #1

Saturday, March 1:

Oregon Scrimmage #1 Willamette Sailing Club, Portland OR Sat Mar 1, 2014 -- Sailors arrived at 10:00 to the Willamette Sailing Club to begin rigging in a cold easterly breeze. Racing got underway shortly before 11:00 in Willamette's fleet of twelve matched C420's. Four races were sailed before a short lunch break inside the club house. After lunch, four more races were sailed before returning to the dock for another short break. At the end of eight races, there were ties for 2nd and 4th with only 14 points separating 2nd from 5th. Sailors returned to the river at 15:15 to sail one last race and see who could win the tie breakers.

The fleet was filled with twenty-six sailors from eleven Oregon high schools, most sailing in mixed or split teams. The breeze oscillated all day between the North and East, with big swings in pressure. Sailors' patience was tested with the balance between getting to the new pressure and playing the current. In the end, the sailors from St. Mary's Academy in A fleet and Newport High School in B held onto win.

A huge thanks to the parents that braved the cold weather and kept the races going as well as those that worked the galley and kept hot chocolate and warm food ready throughout the day. A big thanks to Hood River and Newport high schools for making the drive as well - we hope to see more of you at the next event!
