Saturday morning, 20 Gold Fleet and 18 Silver Fleet teams converged on Sail Sand Point for the annual Combined Division regatta. After a 1030 competitors' meeting, sailors headed out onto Lake Washington for a 1130 first warning. The wind direction settled in at SSW within seconds of scheduled start time on Saturday and continued to build while Gold Fleet completed two races in the exciting 40 boat fleet. Strong gusts moved in just as the Silver Fleet arrived in the starting area. Several capsizes made a timely start impossible and the fleet was sent ashore. After a brief time out for weather reports and consultation with coaches, Gold Fleet competitors returned for another two races, a quick rotation, and finally two more races to end the day. Wind speeds varied drastically throughout the day from 8-15 mph, with frequent puffs in the high 20s as the day progressed.
Sunday's weather was again challenging, with the added prognosis of squalls in the afternoon. Silver fleet completed two slow races in a rainy southerly, but the real breeze began as Gold headed out onto the race course. Overpowering conditions for the Gold Fleet sailors, and the impending forecast, forced abandonment of racing for the day at 1130. Just as the last trailers left the parking lot, the wind again picked up this time to a robust 25-35 mph with some gusts recorded in the mid 50s. A big thank you to all the teams/programs, coaches, sailors, and parents for sticking it out through challenging regatta conditions all weekend. And an even bigger thank you to our RC group of Philip, Chris, Anthony, Jim, Darby, Rich, Ivy, Audrey, Jay, Randy, and all of our parent volunteers on land.
