Port Townsend Open

Summary

Saturday, May 14:

16 teams from 9 different high schools arrived in Port Townsend to race FJs today.

Light, fickle wind persisted most of the day, making things difficult for both the sailors and the race committee. A light ~4-knot north-easterly eventually arrived just before noon, and held steady long enough to get 4 races run before it died away around 2:00 PM. The next two hours saw wind varying from 0 to 2-4 knots, sometimes from the north, sometimes from the northeast or east, and sometimes from the south. A fifth race (3A) was accomplished during a nice 20-minute period with 3-4 knots from the northeast, under a light sprinkle of rain. And the sixth and final race (3B) finished just before 4:00 PM, in a relatively steady 4 knots from the north, also under light sprinkles.

The race committee was impressed by the level of patience shown by the sailors, who waited out the periods of no wind, fought the fickle conditions (including a bit of current), and endured the rain -- we believe they were patient because they knew that if they managed to win, they would receive chocolate (they had been so informed during the competitor's meeting). In the end, Port Townsend took the chocolate in the gold foil, with 10 points, followed by Gig Harbor (chocolate in silver foil) with 24 and Bainbridge (chocolate in silicon bronze foil) with 27.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
