Four schools presented 5 teams for fleet racing on April 9, 2016 on the Lafayette River in Norfolk, VA. According to sail flow, at 9am winds at the Lafayette river station were WSW and averaged 20 mph with gusts into the 30s. Sail flow recorded winds that steadily built to an average of 30 at 10 am. At 11 the wind spiked to an average of 40 mph with gusts to 50. Our plan was to avoid the heaviest winds in the Lafayette by sailing early with combined divisions, on the east side of Hampton Blvd. bridge and to have the sailors drop sails and be towed back through the docks and the more exposed waters after racing when winds were expected to be at their height. The plan was implemented effectively with racing completed around 10:30. The sailors handled the conditions very well and dropped sails as the winds spiked. Three W2 races were completed with Norfolk Collegiate 2 taking first place, followed by Hampton High School in second and Norfolk Collegiate 1 in third place.
