A strong and cold 18 to 27 knot northerly wind greeted the 18 teams in attendance at the 2017 MASSA Mallory Qualifier at United States Marchant Marine Academy. Eight races in each division were completed around W4 courses using only 1 fleet of Z420 dinghies. With the gnarly conditions we used only Z420s and rotations took place on the dock. The sailors handled the heavy air day with poise and seemed to enjoy the classic KP open water conditions. Lighter sou'westerly winds are on call for Sunday. Tomorrow we will begin with race 9A at 1000, we will use the FJ fleet to get more racing in with rotations taking place on the water.
Two opposing protests were heard and disallowed.
Thank you to the USMMA Midshipmen for helping run a great and challenging day of racing.
Sailors showed up to drastically different conditions than yesterday. We had to postpone on shore until around 1245. A light westerly started filling in and we set a course to that direction. We were able to start 9A in about 4 knots but unfortunately had to abandon before sailors reached mark 1. The right side lost all breeze and a lefty allowed sailors in the middle of the course to lay the mark on port tack giving unfair racing conditions. We reset to a new SW wind direction but only had small pockets of pressure. Unable to get two races started before the deadline we sent sailors home. We were unable to run any races today.
Congratulations to Severn School, Christian Brothers Academy, Christchurch School and Ranney School for qualifying for the 2017 Mallory Trophy at MIT May 13-14. Sail fast!
Thank you again to the USMMA Midshipman for helping run a great event.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
