Thirteen Teams from the Mid-Atlantic Scholastic Sailing Association met on a sunny Saturday morning for the MASSA Spring Silver Championship hosted by Washington College. Winds from the west at 10-12 knots provided fantastic racing conditions for this year’s regatta. Ten complete sets of both A and B Divisions were sailed in front of the Boathouse at Washington College as coaches, parents and fans were able to watch the races from either the pavilion or point. As the breeze built during the day we had a few capsizes and one breakdown that was addressed in the scoring. The race committee was able to run the races with very minor course adjustments throughout the day. Many thanks to the sailing team of Washington College for running this event. Paul Hart and Charles Streitweiser on start finish, Mason Sheen handling the mark chase duties and Ellie Lienert doing the scoring. Seven protests were submitted along with one redress that was denied. Two protests were withdrawn and the high school coaches heard five protests of which one resulted with a DSQ for race 2.
Sunday proved to be a more challenging day at the westerly of the day before was competing with a southerly that finally filled to allow racing to resume at 10:30 AM. Three races in each division were completed after a few abandonments and course adjustments. A real credit to the race committee to adjust the course direction and length to provide a fair course throughout the remaining races on Sunday. Congratulations to Severn, Edmund Burke, and Key School for finishing first through third in this years Silver Championship. Again many thanks to Washington College and it's sailing team for hosting and running a fun and well run regatta.
