SAISA North Points #7 2017

Six teams competed in the SAISA North Points #7 regatta at Lake Jordan April 1, 2017. Twelve races were completed in great breezes at the beautiful inland venue! The wind started out 12-15 knots out of the Northwest early in the day and then backed down to 6-10 knots out of the North / NNW in the afternoon. The racing was extremely tight on the WL twice around course, with excellent starts, highly competitive upwind legs, tight mark roundings and many finishes separated by less than 20 seconds from first to fourth place. Excellent sportsmanship was displayed with teams doing their circles on the water to resolve any rule violations.

Entering the last two A fleet and two B fleet races, the top two teams were separated by only two points and only one point separated third and fourth place. This set up lots of suspense for the final four races. During the final race of the day the overall regatta lead changed hands three times as the top two teams moved between first and fourth place during the race. What a fitting finish on the same day the NCAA would have two great final four games!

In the end Pine Lake Prep and J. T. Hoggard finished in a tie for the overall trophy with Pine Lake winning the tie breaker! Cape Fear Academy finished third and Lake Norman High finished fourth. Hoggard took the A division trophy home with Pine Lake in second. Pine Lake took the B division trophy home with Hoggard in second.

This venue has produced tightly contested regattas in great conditions the past three years. The venue has no tides, very little motorboat traffic and an elevated viewing area over the sailing area. The RTP HS Program always rolls out the red carpet with hot dog and chili lunch provided during racing and a fun dinner after the racing on Saturday. For 2017/2018 season this regatta will move to the fall. We would highly encourage more teams from across the district to put this regatta on their calendars and come experience this excellent regatta!
