Fifteen teams from ten MASSA schools converged on Mill Creek in Hampton Virginia for the premier MASSA Girls Fleet Race Championship. Temperatures hovered in the low 70’s. The overcast morning started with flat seas and SSW winds of 10 mph that clocked to due west and died after race 2 causing an abandonment before a successful race 3 with WNW winds of 10mph. After a lunch break on land, races continued until 5:00 with winds at 10-15 mph with higher gusts that continued to clock north throughout the afternoon raising occasional seas of up to 1 foot during blustery periods.
Sailors completed 17 races averaging about 18 minutes on a W-4 course. The day concluded with Norfolk Collegiate School in first place with 38 points, Christchurch School Team 1 in second place with 45 points, and Southern Regional High School in third place with 52 points.
Races resumed with first warning at 9:02 AM in a light rain with winds out of the NE at 5mph and flat seas. After finishing the third race with diminishing north winds, the course was adjusted and racing continued with light and variable NNE winds. The threat of becalming, coupled with fog overtaking the course led to concluding racing at 1:40 with 26 W-4 races completed for the regatta.
Congratulations to Norfolk Collegiate School for capturing first place with 53 points, to Christchurch School in second place with 71 points, and to Southern Regional High School in third place with 87 points.
Many thanks to regatta chair and PRO Allen KIlgore for running an efficient regatta with warmth and enthusiasm, and to his "crew", Tom Dixon, Sam Brady, Ric Handly, Joe Kilgore, and Zig, for shuffling people to the floating dock, keeping the course square, and running crash boats.
