Eighteen schools from 5 MASSA leagues were greeted on the Rappahannock by a seasonably warm 80 degree day with cloudless skies and SSW winds of 10-17 knots, gusts just over 25 knots and minor oscillations. Seas presented with a wind whipped chop toppling more thatn a few boats.
After sailing across the river to the course, racing commenced at 10:00AM and ran until 5:00PM, with lunch on the water. Sailors completed 12 18-22 min. W-4 races in each of 2 divisions on a single course with staggered starts, leaving only 6 races to complete the round robin on Sunday.
The protest committee awarded 2 redresses for equipment failures, and one DSQ for violation of rule 15. The day's racing concluded with Christchurch School claiming first place with the hometown advantage and 85 points, Ranney in second place with 111 points, and Annapolis High School in third place with 128 points.
Despite a gloomy forecast, partly cloudy skies gave way to periods of sun poking through with a few light showers around midday. Southerly 10 knot winds dropped to 5 at times clocking east with increasing oscillations as the day progressed.
Sailors competed in eight additional races in each division completing a full round robin of 18 W-4 races for the regatta. No protests were filed. Racing concluded at 2:00PM.
Congratulations to Christchurch School for capturing first place with 131 points. Mamaroneck Raney & Severn School rallied neck and neck in the last races resulting in Mamaroneck finishing second with 195 points, and Ranney taking third place with 196 points Severn finishing in fourth place. These top three teams will move on to the Mallory National Fleet Race Regatta, and the next five teams are offered berths at the Phebe Corckran King Memorial Regatta.
Great thanks to all of the volunteers, especially Jordan Bothwick and Jared Rodriguez for serving as PRO and running a clean, efficient regatta, and to Kieran O'Connell for serving as regatta chair and putting together a fantastic event.
