NYISA - SE Fleet Race Championship

Summary

Saturday, April 7:

The NYISA-SE Fleet Race Championship was held on Saturday. Forecasts predicted up to five inches of snow just two days before the event, but by Friday the weather appeared clear and the decision was made to hold the event. Despite the lack of snow, the day started off with frigid temperatures and high winds. With gusts approaching 17 knots, several jib windows blew before launching and were replaced. Unfortunately, the trend continued and no less than four of the nine windows popped before the end of the day. With no more replacements, racing continued regardless. Fortunately, all teams were able to sail in each boat at least once, so whatever competitive difference existed were minimized.

From the first start it was clear that racing between the Rye and Mamaroneck teams would be tight. Rye retained the lead between races two and seven, before exchanging the lead two more times with Mamaroneck. After finally retaking first after the second to last race, Rye managed to claim the championship with 45 total points to Mamaroneck's 51. In third was The Stony Brook School with 78, followed by Rye Country Day and the EEYS composite team with 89 and 95 respectively.

Thanks to all the teams that attended for dealing with the various challenges of the day. Overall, it was a clean event with close racing and few capsizes or protests. Thanks for coming!
