The pre-race presentation from Sail Black Rock, Head Race Coach Peter Coleman, was excellent and inspiring. Coach Coleman discussed his training to try to gain a spot in the Olympics and his time on two America's Cup campaigns. Program director, Dave White raffled off a New York Yacht Club, American Magic Cap, signed by Team Captain, Terry Hutchinson.
The morning racing took place in heavy air with gusts over 30 knots out of the West. Sound School chose to withdraw due to the heavy conditions. RC set up in the main harbor to provide some protection from higher gusts and rough seas off St. Mary's Point, where most regattas are held. The competitors and Sail Black Rock Race Management did remarkably well. Several power boats were on hand to help manage the capsizes, as well as a dedicated rescue boat with rescue swimmer. RC completed 2 races per division in exhilarating conditions. The course was modified at one point with a reaching mark to try and minimize the downwide death rolls.
RC called the racing due to unsafe conditions early afternoon. RC intended to move the course inshore to the sheltered cove directly off the Sail Black Rock docks after a lunch break pizza party, sponsored by Regatta Ginger Beer. Conditions in the cove were much more tenable concerning wind velocity and the tide was rising providing adequate depth.
Polling of competitors at the pizza party garnered the general sentiment most were exhausted and not anxious to go out again. It was decided to put continuing the regatta in the cove to a vote by all coaches. Coaches voted to not continue racing.
Awards for for the top three placing teams for all four sailors were Mystic Knotworks sailors bracelets in gold, silver and bronze. The overall winner for 2019 was Brunswick.
