MASSA 2019 Girls Championship

Summary

Saturday, May 4:

Fourteen schools, making up 16 teams, descended on Toms River, New Jersey for the 2019 MASSA Girls' Championship hosted by Christian Brothers Academy, Toms River Yacht Club and Ocean County College.

After an hour and a half postponement to start the day, 12 races were completed on Saturday, seven W4s and five W3s. The wind challenged both the girls and race management team, shifting from southeast to northeast, before steadying at an easterly direction later in the day. The course had to be flipped more than a few times and W3 courses were necessary to expedite the rotations.

Rumson-Fair Haven's team one went home for the day with the lead, with Southern Regional in second place. Report time for Sunday is 9:00 a.m.

Sunday, May 5:

Day two saw a sizable weather system come through the area, which included non-stop rain, but also gave the girls a nice northeast breeze at 10 to 15 knots.

Eight races were completed in about three hours of sailing, split between four W4s and four W3s. Racing was finished around 1:00 p.m. to get the girls out of the cold rain.

After 20 total races, Southern Regional's Brielle Willoughby and Bridget Green emerged as the winner with 76 points, using four straight top-two finishes to complete the day. Rumson-Fair Haven's Colleen O'Brien and Shaanti Choi-Bose finished second with 80 points and Rumson-Fair Haven's Michaela O'Brien and Ameila Buch took third with 82 points. Ranney's Brooke Schmelz, Alexa Whitman and Alexandria Forrest were a close fourth with 85 points.

Many thanks to the race management team for running this event in erratic weather conditions: Jason Lutz (PRO), Mike Ehnot (mark boat), and Ryan Ehnot (race committee) from Christian Brothers Academy; MASSA Director Dr. Randall Nunn (finish boat/mark boat); Dave Magno (mark boat); Harry Foote and Priscilla Gettis (US Sailing judges).

Special thanks to Toms River Yacht Club for use of the facilities and Ocean County College for use of the 420 fleet.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
