MASSA Team Race Championship (Baker Qualifier)

Summary

Saturday, April 27:

Arriving under partly cloudy skies on the Lafayette River, eight schools from the Mid-Atlantic District competed for the opportunity to advance to the Baker National Team Race Championship or the National Invitational Tournament. With winds barely south of west sustained at 10-20 mph and offering only minor oscillations but gusts up to 30 mph. Seas were up to 2 feet.

A full round robin and most of a second, totaling 49 races, on a digital N course were completed on this first day of competition. Christchurch School finished the first day of competition in first place with 11 wins and 1 loss, They were closely followed by Severn School with 10 wins and 1 loss. Rye High School took third place with 9 wins and 2 losses. Ranney School and Norfolk Collegiate School held a tie for forth place with 6 wins and 6 losses each.

A number of DSQ's were granted due to assistance with capsizes. One request for redress was heard, resulting in a resail of race 37 was granted for Sunday due to a parting rudder hold line on a new boat.

Sunday, April 28:

Sailors were met on the Lafayette River with with temperatures that reached 80 degrees and initial SSW winds of of 10-18 gusting to 25 that gently oscillated to WSW and back. Skies were partly cloudy and seas were choppy.

Before competition commenced with race 50, redress for race 37 being reopened. Redress was denied and original scores reinstated due to rule 5.5. An additional 35 races were completed filling out three full round robins (84 races) for the regatta. Severn School won the the tie breaker against Christchurch School for the first place trophy. Christchurch School took second place, followed by Rye High School capturing the third place trophy.
