The first day of the MA State Championship on the Charles River at the MIT Sailing Pavilion started with a weak shifty wind that filled in with a 10-14 mph easterly. A nice respite from the very windy conditions that forced a severe curtailment of the Mass Bay League Fleet Racing Championship on Monday and Tuesday downriver at Community Boating. Four races were held in each of the two divisions, using the double trapezoid courses: A in FJs and B in Fireflys.
The second day of the MA State Championship brought back the breeze that had cancelled racing earlier in the week: sustained windspeeds of 15-20 mph with gusts over 25. Challenging conditions that led to some capsizes in nearly every race in the B Division (Fireflys). But you're not really a sailor until you've been baptized in the Charles. After the third B Division race, the Fireflys were reefed using MIT's zipper reefing system. Six races were held in each division, using the double trapezoid courses. One protest was heard, leading to a disqualification.
Congratulations to the Belmont Hill School for winning this year's MA State Championship.
We're indebted to MIT Sailing for allowing us to compete at their facility even though the coaches and sailing team were in Newport at the ICSA National Championships. Go MIT!!! Stew Craig, the MIT Dockmaster, was there to run the facility and keep us on the water. The race committee consisted of Joe Zambella as the PRO, John Economides helping out in the start boat. Denise Economides and Jesse Hamilton were in the finish boat. Bobby Foley manned the mark boat while Marty O'Brien helped out on the dock. Carl Zimba managed scoring and the protests. Trevor Long, Fiona McKellar, Stephen Duncan, and Carl Zimba helped the B Division reef their sails in between races, getting them back out on the course with little delay.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
