NJISA 2022 Girls' Fleet Championship

Summary

Sunday, April 24:

The 2022 NJISA Girls' Fleet Championship welcomed 11 teams from eight schools to sail in the league qualifier for the MASSA Girls' Championship in two weeks.

A cool northeast breeze greeted the girls at Toms River Yacht Club and racing began on time at 10:30. The wind oscillated quite a bit between north and east throughout the day's 10 races. At times, gusts reached 18 knots, but would regularly steady back to between 10 and 15 knots. In total, five W4 races and W3 races were completed, with the W3 races allowing the girls to visit the dock for coaching in the single division format.

The Pingry School's Pilar Cundey and Abby Baird jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it, recording first or second place finishes in eight of the 10 races. Southern Regional's Kennedy Laureigh and Natalie Shaw won three races in the middle of the series to tighten up the scores, ultimately finishing a strong second place.

Spots three through six also qualified for the MASSA Girls' Championship: Southern Regional's Belle Placa and Erin Little, Toms River South's Ella Demand, Ava McNabb and Mollie Smith, Ranney's Alexa Whitman and Ashley Abboud, and Ranney's Grace Bray and Alexandria Forrest.

Traditionally run by the all-boys Christian Brothers Academy, their head coach Jason Lutz served as PRO with race committee assistance from CBA junior Nick Cuhna. Thanks to Dr. Randall Nunn and Dave Magno for serving as mark set and patrol boats, and Brian Hull for running a safety boat. Harry Foote and Pris Gettis graciously volunteered their time as US Sailing judges. Of course, thank you to TRYC and BBYRA for supplying the facility and FJ fleet.

Best of luck to the girls competing at the MASSA Championship in Annapolis on May 7 and 8!

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
