Nine NJISA schools making up 14 sailing teams arrived at TRYC this morning to compete in the 2022 NJISA Spring Open Regatta.
Racing started around 10:30 AM in windchilled cool temperatures in southwesterly winds ranging from 12-15 knots. Intermittent clouds and sunshine created many changing conditions as the velocity and direction of wind clocked back and forth from west-to-south, and then back again throughout the day. There were periods of wind with gusts in the high teens, along with episodes of calm. There was precipitation ranging from light drizzle to brief periods of heavy rain, then blues skies and sunshine; the sailors experienced a wide range of challenging conditions throughout the day.
Seven W4 races were completed in each division. At the end of racing for the day, the Christian Brothers Academy Colts 1 team with sailors Ryan Ehnot, Mitchell Hnatt, Colin Guerrera, and Nicholas Cunha won the regatta with a total of 46 points. The CBA Colts 2 team of Bryce Vitiello, Luke Pennisi, Noah Kuzloski and Kyle Lombardino followed in second place with 49 points. The Donovan Catholic Griffins 1 team of James Kopeck, Caroline Felser, Kevin Brooksbank and Nora Ciak were right behind in third place with 50 points to round out the tightly spaced top three for the day.
Thank you to Dr. Randall Nunn for organizing and running the races for the day. As usual, thanks go out Dave Magno for chasing the wind all around the river, moving marks and keeping the course square. Thank you to again to our official score keeper Jason Lutz for recording and updating the scores during the day. And as always, were are grateful to Toms River Yacht Club for the use of their facilities, our partnership the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association and all the family and friends of NJISA that continue to support high school sailing in our area.
