Fifteen schools from the three MASSA District leagues of NYISA-SE, NYISA-NW and NJISA arrived at the SUNY Maritime College early in the morning welcomed by sunny skies, cool temperatures and a brisk 10-14 knot WNW breeze.
Racing got under way around 10:00AM with the sailors experiencing races in oscillating wind with varied velocities. The East River’s flood tide during the first half of the day’s racing, and then an ebb tide during the latter races in the afternoon, kept things interesting for the sailors. Six W4 races were completed in each division before racing was called off close to 4:00PM as the wind continued to decrease .
There was a slight delay to address some breakdowns early on, and one protest was heard but disallowed by the protest committee later in the day.
The Stony Brook Bears came out on top at the end of the day with 35 total points, after trading places back and forth with the Christian Brothers Academy Colts who finished in second with 42 points. The Rye High School Garnets were a close one point behind in third place with their 43 points.
The Rye High School Garnets A Division sailors Vanessa Lahrkamp and Jack Emmerson had a streak of top-5 finishes to win their division with 17 points. The Stony Brook Bears’ Steven Hardee and Sean Beaver were second in A division with 23 points and the CBA Colts Ryan Ehnot and Mitchell Hnatt won the tie-breaker against Donovan Catholic Griffins James Kopeck and Caroline Felser to lock their third place division position with 28 points.
The Stony Brook Bears B Division sailors Gavin Hudson, Sebastian Hell, Mairead Reitzel and Isabella Seminario worked together to score four “bullets” and win their division with a commanding 12 points. The CBA Colts Colin Guerrera and Nicholas Cunha were close behind in second with 14 points and Rye High School Garnets sailors Lillian Saffer and Finn Palermo placed third in B Division with 26 points.
Thank you to the SUNY Maritime College sailing team sailors Clare Guarascio, Finn Rauch, Ben Hosford, Robbie Mansuetoo, John Donnelly, Shawn Tirone, Morgan Essex and Nicole Schaffer who worked together to do a great job running the races, keeping the course adjusted throughout the day and keeping the scores updated online.
Thank you to Head Sailing Coach Zach Runci (and his dog Misty) and Assistant Coach Katherine “KJ” Jones for making room in the schedule for this NY vs NJ regatta and helping to organize and keep things running shoreside throughout the day.
Thank you to SUNY Maritime College for the use of their fleet of 420s and facilities, and all their sailors and staff for volunteering their time to host a great regatta.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
