Michigan State Doublehanded Championship

Saturday, October 22:

A gloriously sunny morning greeted 14 teams for the 2016 Michigan State Doublehanded Championship. The temperatures were not as glorious, topping out in the high 40s. The winds were blustery, ranging from mid-20 knots in the morning to 20 knots midday to mid-teens in the afternoon. The teams were well-prepared with their drysuits, and were ready to meet the challenging conditions. A division launched at approximately 10:30. Difficulties setting the race course kept them waiting on the water for over 90 minutes for the first race, with coaches making sure they were all warm enough and ready to sail. Once sailing got underway, both A division and B division completed seven races. Despite the chilly conditions, sailors and spectators enjoyed camaraderie while watching racing from the sea wall. Due to the delay in starting racing, the day was long, with B division finishing after 5:30 pm.

Congratulations to our repeat Michigan State Champions - Grosse Pointe South! Congratulations also go to the second place team, East Grand Rapids, and third place finisher Grosse Ile High School, winning the tie breaker over fourth place finisher Spring Lake High School. We had three new teams participating in State Champs this year: Black River, Brother Rice, and University Liggett School.

A huge thank you to PRO Ron Spies, everyone helping out on the water and land, regatta chair Harold Stackpoole, scorer Kathy Johnson, MISSA East Rep. Lynn Frikker, and the hospitality team led by Torrey Stackpoole.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
