Sailors from all around the MASSA District arrived at Shore Acres Yacht Club for day-1 of the MASSA Cressy Qualifier. There was a nice southerly breeze that gradually built to 15 mph before subsiding to 10-12mph with a slight shift to the west.
Eight W5 races were sailed in the upper Bargenat Bay. One protest was filed, and one redress was filed with hearing to be held Sunday morning before racing.
The sailors reported back to SAYC Sunday morning only to look out at the large, flat clam expanse of the Bay with no sign of wind in sight. After a postponement of approximately 2 hours due to the lack of wind, the sailors proceeded back out to the racing area in a light NNE breeze.
By the time the fleet arrived to the course, the wind clocked another 20° to the right, but then settled in at a nice 8-10 breeze with very little oscillations.
The Race Committee was able to have both the Radial and Laser full-rig fleets complete three more W5 races for a total of eleven over the two-day event.
Rye High School's Matthew Wallace had a commanding performance day one in the Radial with a string of six bullets to establish a solid lead over the next competitors and ended the regatta with a total of 32 points. The Severn Schools Owen Hennessey had consistent top ten finishes for the weekend to finish in 2n place with 45 points, while his Severn teammate Robby Meek rounded out the top of the fleet with 52 points to lock in a solid 3rd place standing.
The Laser full-rig fleet was won by St Mary's High School senior James Golden who finished with 17 points, consisting of seven 1st place finishes for the weekend. The Key School's Charles Anderson finishes were all in the top three each race, with left him in a sold 2n place for the regatta. Friso Grolleman put Bathesda-Chevy Chase High School on the winners' podium with his 35 points total and 3rd place finish.
Two protests were filed; one protest was withdrawn and the other was disallowed based upon procedural rules.
Special thanks to Shore Acres Yacht Club and their kind hospitality and access to their new club building. Also, thanks to the following area volunteers who help out over the weekend.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
