Toms River, NJ - Eleven NJISA schools, making up thirteen teams, sailed in the NJISA Spring Season's first weekend regatta. Chilly morning temperature in the mid to high 30's increased to the mid 40's, under party cloudy skies throughout the day.
As forecast, the wind did NOT cooperate, as significant wind shifts and periods of no wind made setting the course and getting races off very challenging. The initial light NNW breeze died off shortly after the first A division race, which resulted in more than an hour long postponement and the boats being towed back to the dock for a lunch break and long wait for a breeze to fill back in. Around 1230 hours, the wind returned from a more northernly direction and the second A division race was completed in a 5-8 mph breeze. The wind continued to clock further right, requiring the course be reset after each race before the light ENE breeze completely died out around 1500 hours to end the day. There were six W4 and one W3 race completed for the day (Race A4 was dropped).
The changing wind conditions tested the skill of the teams from the top to the bottom of the fleet. In the end, the CBA Colts ended up in first place with 20 points followed by the Toms River North Mariners in second with 27 points. The Summit Hilltoppers finished close behind them in third with 29 points.
Thank you to all the sailors, coaches, parents and friends, especially those who traveled from further away, for spending the day in support of NJISA high school sailing.
