The NJISA Spring Season started with Mother Nature reminding everyone that it is still winter, and with four more days until the vernal equinox we’ll look forward to it officially being Spring with hopes of warmer weather arriving soon.
Thirteen NJISA high schools, making up 15 teams arrived at Toms River Yacht Club under clear blue skies and crisp temperatures in the 30°’s to sail in this year’s Icebreaker Regatta. Teams were on the water and racing began around 1030 hrs.
W4 courses were sailed in a gradually building westerly breeze that brought more waves and higher gusts (20 mph+) as the day went on. Even though the temperature climbed into the low 40°’s, the wind chill factor kept the “feels like” temperature below freezing out on the water throughout the day’s racing. Five races were completed in each division before racing was called for the day.
All of the teams sailed very well in the brisk, windy conditions, but the Ranney Panthers had strong A and B finishes to come out on top for the day with 29 total points. The Southern Regional Rams finished the day in second with 46 points, just one point ahead of the Christian Brothers’ Academy Colts with their 47 points for a third place finish.
The top three A division teams were Ranney, CBA and Southern. The top three B Division teams were Trinity Hall, Ranney and Southern.
Thank you to Dave Magno for bundling up in his winter ski gear to spend the day on the water setting marks and patrolling the course. And as always, many thanks to OCC and TRYC for the use of their fleet of boats, facilities and continued support of NJISA high school sailing.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
