Port Angeles Open

Summary

Saturday, April 13:

Teams arrived in Port Angeles from across the Northwest and were welcomed by friendly volunteers and great hospitality from PAYC. Racing started after a brief delay in light winds oscillating 90 degrees between N and E. This was the precursor to the forecasted westerly gale. Racing was slow and the markset boats were busy trying to keep up with the shifting winds. The wind began shifting more and more left as we got into the early afternoon. Once it settled into a westerly direction the breeze built quickly, going from 5-8 knots to 12-15 knots in a matter of minutes for the second A-set. By the time B-fleet was on the water it was 15 knots with higher gusts. Race 3B was finished in 20+ knots and racers were sent ashore after finishing. 4B was attempted 20 minutes later, but a second squall line with gusts in the upper 20's forced the abandonment of 4B as we entered recovery mode and dealt with multiple capsizes. Racing was abandoned for the day once everyone was ashore.

Sunday, April 14:

The remnants of Saturday night's gale provided excellent racing conditions for the second day. Racing got underway on time in westerly winds of 5-10 knots. As the day went on the wind built to 10-15 knots with some puffs in the upper teens. Racing was completed at 1330 so that teams from Oregon could make the 5-6 hour drive back home. Big thanks to the all the PAYC volunteers, especially Erika Hansen-Dahlin for doing a lot of the behind the scenes work organizing the regatta.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
