2021 ISSA Mallory Fleet Race National Championship

Summary

Saturday, June 5:

The 2021 ISSA Fleet Race National Championship (Mallory Trophy) was hosted by the Foundry at the Historic Coast Guard Station in Cleveland, Ohio this weekend. Thank you to our PRO Steve Harris, Regatta Chair Cathy Newpher, Chief Judge Cliff Black, Mike Kaspar, John Porter, Nancy Zangerle and Todd Rogers for on the water judging and the many volunteers who donated their time to help with the running of the regatta.

Saturday began with clear, sunny skies, warm temperatures, and a light and variable SW breeze averaging about 5 knots. All teams were present and accounted for. There were no change of boat rotations, so teams drew for a boat and raced that boat for the duration of the regatta. Winds were up and down throughout the day and finally settled in around 3pm. Winds ranged from 5 to 15 knots. There was a brief break in the action during rotations for a freighter entering the harbor. Racing continued until 6:00pm on Saturday completing 16 races, 8 for each division.

A total of fifteen intended protests were reported to the RC, ten were filed with the judges. Three of those were later withdrawn, and four were dismissed. Three resulted in penalties.

Sunday, June 6:

The competitors meeting Sunday included a belated awards ceremony for the Baker last month.

Sunday provided temperatures in the 80s, with an abundance of sun, but unfortunately, the winds were light and variable. At the scheduled first warning, the wind was about 3 knots and shifty. The race committee remained in the harbor until approximately 2:00pm, and the sailors went out several times when it seemed racing might be possible. Ultimately, there was never a steady breeze over 3 knots. The ISSA rep and the PRO made the decision to abandon racing for the day as there were no signs of the wind conditions improving. No races were completed on Sunday.

Antilles High School took home first place, followed by Mater Dei in second place, and The Severn School in third. Congratulations to those sailors that made it to the 2021 ISSA Fleet Race National Championships!

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
