Ten NJISA teams descended on Toms River Yacht Club for the 2026 Spring Fleet Championship and qualifier for MASSA District events. While it was a sunny, 60+ degree day, it was a super shifty day on Toms River, as the breeze started from the northwest and went left to the west in increments. The shifty breeze also brought some puff lines that saw sailors hiking hard, with the velocity going from 5-8 knots to 12-14 in a moment's notice. Ultimately, 14 W4 races were completed on the day.
Southern Regional sailed well on Saturday, holding a two point lead at the end of sailing. Christian Brothers Academy remains in contention in second place. Donovan Catholic is in third, while Pingry holds the fourth spot.
Sailing will begin with B7 on Sunday.
Racing resumed on Sunday in a northeast breeze at 7-10 knots. The wind slowly trended right towards an easterly direction by the conclusion of the six races. Three W4 and three W3 courses were sailed to complete the full rotation.
Southern Regional and CBA were tied going into the final B set, but it was the Rams who had the stronger finish to earn the spring title. Donovan Catholic was a solid third place, while Pingry was fourth. In A Division, Southern's Jude Ryon, Evan Colon and Sergio Santos edged CBA's Christopher Small, Christian Diaz and Joseph Borrachia by one point. In B Division, Southern's Gannon Botwinick, Ava Stabile and Sergio Santos were the top team, followed by CBA's Cole Buczkowski and Edward Solodkiy.
The top four teams have qualified for the MASSA District Championship and Mallory Qualifier, which will be held on May 9-10 in Annapolis. The next set of teams qualify for the MASSA Invitational at Washington College on the same weekend.
Many thanks to PRO John Barbano for running the races this weekend, assisted on the RC by Tracy Van Dorpe and Mike Buczkowski, and Jody Lutz for setting the course in tricky conditions. As always, thank you to TRYC for hosting us and the BBYRA for partnering with us on the FJ fleet.
