2018 Sea Otter SILVER

This year's Sea Otter Regatta was one for the books- record books! Race Committee ventured out Saturday morning to a very light Northerly and a 650-foot cruise ship on the race course. (See picture"60 Davids chase Goliath out of the Bay"). As the breeze filled we set marks only to see a traditional NW fill in. But- that was not to last as we chased the wind until a solid southerly filled in. Racing started in 5-8 kts of breeze but when the southerly came in it did so with a vengeance and sustained winds of 11-15 with gusts to 19.6 kts. At one point we had five boats capsized at once! It's a tribute to the sailors and the training of their coaches that all were able to right their FJ's and race! After completing 20 races we docked about 6:20 pm.

Sunday brought much more traditional conditions and sailors completed 12 races in 6-12 kts of breeze from the WNW. On both days we saw great starts in both Gold and Silver fleets, along with plenty of penalty turns when fouls occurred.(picture 2 shows Gold fleet on the line just after the starting signal). RC salutes the sailors for embracing Rule 2! All sailors were also most respectful as they sailed by RC after finishing to thank the race committee. See all next year!
